基于 默沙东卫生手册 Merck Manual / MSD Manual 关于自慰的医学共识整理。
自慰是人类最常见的性行为之一（Roth et al., 2023）。
约有 97% 的男性和 80% 的女性曾有过自慰行为；其中，33% 的女性和 66% 的男性报告称，在此前 4 周内至少自慰过一次（Mercer et al., 2013）。
目前没有发现自慰会导致已知的生理负面后果（Zimmer & Imhoff, 2020）。
虽然自慰通常是无害的，但一些人仍然持有反对或惩罚性的态度，由此造成的内疚感可能带来明显困扰，并影响性表现。
只有在以下情况下，自慰才会被视为异常：
- 妨碍以伴侣为对象的性行为；
- 在公共场合进行；
- 因明显的强迫性而造成痛苦，影响工作、社交或其他生活领域的正常进行。
即使在健康的性关系中，自慰也往往会在一定程度上持续存在。自慰者可能会获得更好的幸福感、增强生育能力，并且可以在没有感染性传播疾病风险的情况下获得性满足（Coleman, 2003; Ayad et al., 2018）。
